Seth: **I apologize as I write this about six weeks after we ate here. Ignore any 20130320_194948discrepancies**   We arrived a little buzzed after out Bully Boy distillery tour with a good appetite. We started with our usual round of cocktails. After a slight hiccup with my first drink that Ren talks about we moved on to cocktails and entrees. The duck belly taco was absolutely delicious. We also got a Rillette and cod fritters for appetizers that were also good. Ren went with two appetizers for her entree, John and Makeda got two different burgers and I had a burger with pulled pork on top of it. I shall continue my stance that beef and pork will always be delicious when paired together! I ate the entire burger as well as tastes of everyone else’s and we found ourselves, for one of the first times in this blog’s history, too full for dessert. We told our waitress we’d pass and take the check. Undeterred, she brought us each back our own mini ice cream cone! Just about one big bite, it was a sweet close to a pretty good meal. My favorite thing: the pork belly taco, Yum!

Ren: A trip to Bully Boy for a liquor tour led us to look for a restaurant in the near vicinity.  I stumbled across the Gallows in my search. The menu looked good and I’d heard it was good from a few people so I thought we’d give it a try. Despite looking a little busy from the20130320_201204 outside we didn’t have to wait to be seated. We started the meal off with a few cocktails. Mine contained rum, cider, and fresh lemon a nice way to look forward to the spring that will soon be arriving. Seth made the mistake of ordering the fat washed whiskey drink believing the fat wash to be a bitters thing alas it was bacon and duck fat which made for a very strange drink. After the drinks we had cod fritters, lamb rillette, and duck belly tacos as our appetizers. The tacos were spectacular, juicy, and flavorful.  The fritters and lamb were pretty tasty and well made. For my entrée I decided to have two sides brussle sprouts, and the colcannon. The colcannon was the best of the two with more flavor though the potatoes were a little soupy. The brussle sprouts were ok but a little under-cooked  Everyone else had a burger which were very tasty and juicy. I finished my meal with a cup of coffee and after deciding their one dessert wasn’t for us our waitresses treated us two mini soft serve cones which were thoughtful and delicious. As a side note the menu this evening was Irish themed due to St. Patrick’s Day, I think I would like to return sometimes when they have their regular menu. All-in-all this place is worth a visit especially if you’re in to burgers which seem to be what they do best. Next time I’ll stick to meat dishes though not meat washed drinks. My favorite thing: the amazing flavorful 20130320_194936tacos!

Seth: Always trying to keep with a rotating variety of cuisines, we made our way to the South End again. This time for something we hadn’t done yet: Senegalese food. I arrived after the rest of our party had already sat; a little late from class. I ordered a drink and dived into the menu. Ren had suggestions on appetizers and I thought they all looked great. With 6 of us there tonight we decided on 3 different ones and each got a small bite. Everything was impressive so far and I was looking forward to my lamb. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m always a little nervous on the lamb because it can so easily be overcooked. I was able to request it medium-rare which I was excited about. My Dibi (see above receipt) arrived cooked perfectly!! So excited. The sweet potato fries that came with were good as was the delicious dipping sauce. I grabbed bites of everyone else’s dishes and wasn’t disappointed anywhere. Mike’s Thiébou Yap had an excellent sauce to it and Makeda’s Cornish Hen was cooked just right. The whole table had that excited vibe to it as we all demolished everything on our plates. I’m pretty sure there was a scrap of food remaining on anyone’s plate. Given it was a late dinner and we were all hungry, but that was a good meal. Nothing of real note on the dessert. My favorite thing: My perfect lamb chop

Ren: A longing for exotic and new tastes brought us to Teranga a traditional Senegalese restaurant owned by a former Chopped contestant. We started the evening off with
croquettes de poisson: fish cakes, Nems: spring rolls, and Brochettes de Crevettes: shrimp skewers. Every single bite delighted my senses and left me wanting for more: a shame I had to share with five other people. I washed the appetizers down with a delightfully refreshing Kenyan beer called a Tusker while I longingly awaited my entrée. After a wait my Michoui and Moroccan couscous arrived. As it was placed on the table my eyes widened and stomach growled. It was one of the most beautiful looking dishes I’ve seen in a while and also one of the tastiest. The lamb literally melted in my mouth and the couscous was perfectly cooked and perfectly paired. I am seriously coming back for seconds of this dish! Everyone else’s dish was also incredibly delightful, rich, and full of flavor. I absolutely loved the array of delicious sauces that came with the meals. I washed dinner down with a refreshing Steinlager beer from New Zealand. We then decided to finish the meal with a variation on the beignets which I’ll have to say while not bad were probably the least exciting part of the night. All in all I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone; in fact I would insist on a visit. My favorite thing: the jaw dropping delicious lamb shank.

Service: Seth 7 Ren 7 The service started well with good recommendations and attitude. The a few slip ups were noticed with missed orders and such. The end was a little rough with splitting up our order (we did mention this in the beginning of the meal) and paying. My bill was actually switched with Ren’s and we had to work it out on our own

Total Average: 7.833 Excellent food and cute place. A good date spot. Had the service been consistent this would have been a contender for our top 5

One bad thing: Perhaps the few missteps with the service

Makeda:  As Seth is too busy writing a paper this week for grad school, I will be guest writing for this post.  We were in the mood for something different, so why not Cambodian French fusion, a combination I would never think of pairing. I studied the menu heavily and made my selection before I even entered the restaurant.  When we arrived we were greeted and seated quickly, and started with a bottle of wine.  Elephant Walk has an unexpectedly casual atmosphere, which made for an enjoyable dinner.  If I had any question of how I would feel about Cambodian flavors, they were immediately erased with the first bite of my appetizer; perfect chunks of tuna mixed with creamy avocado, chopped peanuts added a necessary crunch.  A sampling of Seth’s watermelon goat cheese Salad also did not disappoint, the sweet crisp melon complemented the creamy goat cheese perfectly.  Keeping the seafood theme, I followed with a traditional Cambodian dish, described as seafood custard.  Wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed in coconut milk, I devoured every bite of the perfectly cooked seafood inside.  The coconut milk added creaminess without being too heavy.  As is custom I had a sampling of everyone’s entrées, tender duck with bites of caramelized pear left quite an impression, as did the braised short-rib. And then dessert, I finished the night off with the chocolate caramel tart, it was perfect.  A close runner-up was the fruit mouse, almost a palate cleanser it was tangy and just enough sweet.  I will definitely be back at Elephant Walk again; there are still so many things on the menu I need to try. My Favorite Thing: The tuna avocado salad!

Ren: A search for a cuisine we hadn’t tried yet led us to Elephant Walk. A Cambodian French fusion restaurant located near Fenway. We were feeling in a particularly celebratory mood so we decided to start the evening off with a bottle of rose Brut. Which was followed by a round of shots and tasty cocktails making for a very excellent evening. For my appetizer I had spring rolls followed by mussels. Both were incredibly tasty and well prepared with a flavorful dipping sauce and a delightful broth with a kick. Makeda  had a tuna avocado salad appetizer salad which was refreshing and surprisingly flavorful which we all loved. For my entrée I had a pepper caramelized steak over lettuce with white rice. The flavor profile was a great idea and tasty but I found the steak to be slightly over cooked. If it had been cooked just a little bit less I think it would have been much better. John’s short ribs were tender as was Seth’s duck; definitely worth a try. I didn’t get a dessert but I tried a bite of everyone else’s which while a bit to sweet for me were all delicious. The caramel tart was definitely the best of the three. All in all it was a really pleasant evening worth a repeat visit. My favorite thing: a tie between the mussels and the spring rolls.

Service: Ren 8.5 Makeda 8 Other than a slip-up with improper glasses for the Brut, the waitress was friendly and fun. She knew the menu and interacted with our table well.

Total Average: 7.917 We’ll be back here again. The food and service stood out enough to warrant another trip sometime soon. Maybe date night.

Seth: Off to the South End for Restaurant Week to a place we’d been before but never got to review on here. My friend Ryan and his girlfriend Jen came to join the normal crowd of the 4 of us. We made a reservation the day before and when we arrived we were sat in a circle high-back booth. We poured over the special menu and  half of us stuck to it while the rest went with the regular one. We all started with a round of drinks before picking out each of our appetizers, main courses and desserts. My tuna tartare was a little under-whelming but tasty; not as much flavor as I was hoping for. I tried a mussel that had a great sauce and the calamari was really tasty with a great dipping sauce. Next came the perfectly cooked flank steak with a chimichurri sauce that was quite tasty. John’s cod was cooked perfectly as well and had great flavor. Desserts were last and my S’more was ok. Not enough graham cracker and the I think it would have been better with the chocolate softened or melted. A pretty good meal, with good company and an all around enjoyable evening. I’d like to get back here again some time. Maybe I’ll take my fiancée here on a date soon. My favorite thing: The bite of calamari I grabbed

Ren: We took a hop, a skip, and a jump right into the chic booths of Union Bar & Grill this week for the ever tempting restaurant week menu. Though only three out of the six of us ordered off the special menu as some were lured by delicious regular menu items. This was my third visit to this dining establishment and I’ll have to say probably my least favorite visit; though it was still quite an excellent experience. I started my evening with a drink called a new American Classic that contained bourbon, bubbles, and bitters (a delightful combination). My first course was corn fritters topped with crab; a decent beginning, though I thought my boyfriends mussels was the tastiest appetizer on the table. My entrée was the steak with fingerling potatoes and zucchini paired with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The dish was decent, the meat perfectly cooked but a little over salty. I wasn’t wowed by anyone else’s entrée though my boyfriend’s fish was excellently cooked. I topped off my evening with a cheese platter and a bourbon flip both were extremely delightful and made for a perfect end to the evening. My third experience to this restaurant leads me to think fish and cocktails  is definitely what they do well and everything else is fairly average. My favorite thing: The well paired cheese plate

Seth: Barbara Lynch has some pretty incredible restaurants around the city. B & G is one that I’ve been meaning to get to for quite some time. The opportunity arouse with a call from Ren and I jumped at the chance. We had a 6pm reservation and arrived a few minutes early. We were sat immediately with the assistant manager coming by for a hello in the first minutes after sitting down. Our waiter came by and we made some small talk and ordered a beer apiece as we surveyed the menu. We started off with the dozen oysters; four apiece of three different types. All quite fresh and delicious. Three appetizers followed that: First the clam chowder. I usually a fan of thicker cream based chowder, but the bite that this one contained had me almost licking the bowl. Fried oysters and fried calamari followed. An amazing spicy ailoi accompanied the nicely cooked, thinly battered calamari and the fried oysters sat on a half shell with a little tartar sauce between them. I think it had a little wasabi in it but I’m not sure. A beautiful white wine arrived before the entrée. Light, crisp and so delicious, we had to restrain ourselves to keep from finishing it too quickly. We split the Hake plate next and the mac and cheese. The Hake had a bit of lobster bisque, and some roasted pearl onions and artichoke hearts that all paired exquisitely. The mac and cheese had a really tasty lightness and creaminess to it that was  a treat. To close it all off we requested the Rhubard tartlet. I liked it. It was nice but I wish they hadn’t tamed down the tartness so much. It’s my favorite part and was hoping for more of a throwback to my mothers rhubarb dessert. My favorite thing: The fresh oyster opening.

Ren: A series of events strayed us from our original plan to dine at Citizens Public House and we instead found ourselves at a small but elegant restaurant by the name of B&G Oyster. Through a chain of acquaintance we were greeted at the door as if we were old friends and promptly seated. The selections on the menu were vast in flavor and the decisions difficult to be sure. Several moments of discussion and a delicious Lagunitas red brick ale later we came up with and executed our dining plan for the evening.  They started us off with a fresh salmon ceviche amuse bouche which was followed by a dozen amazing oysters; I could have sworn one of which tasted like bubble gum. Next up was fried oysters with a homemade tartar sauce, fried calamari with a spicy aioli, a clam chowder with a kick, and a sample of their fish deviled eggs. Now I normally prefer a clam chowder a bit creamier but I found their  broth to really compliment the flavor. At this time our charming and attentive waiter David brought over an incredibly delicious and crisp bottle of Godello; which we had to prevent ourselves from downing in one gulp. Next up we dined upon Hake with artichokes, pearl onions, and a chowder sauce as well as an order of parmesan mac & cheese. Let me tell you that mac & cheese was just out of this world light and delicious; I’m told the secret is the mascarpone they add. We finished off the meal with a rhubarb tart which while light and perfect for spring was a little lacking on the tartness we love about rhubarb.  It was an incredibly delightful evening
that we will definitely be repeating in the near future with more dining companions. My Favorite thing: A tie between the fresh amazing oysters and spectacular mac & cheese.

Seth: For something new we looked to do a BBQ place this week. We had been to Red Bones in Somerville before and thought to try something new. (In hindsight, we should have stuck with what we knew) Ren had a friend that worked here so in we came. It’s a nice looking restaurant and I like the long picnic-like tables. The options for food mostly were different tray options, with one, two or three meat choices, accompanied with two sides, tasty bread & butter pickles and a couple of slices of white bread. We started with the Bucket of biscuits and hush puppies. The biscuits were huge, tasty and came with this excellent honey butter. The hush puppies were the best I’ve had though I’ve only had these at two other places. I ordered the tray with one meat option choosing the pulled pork. I wanted the pork belly, but unfortunately, they were all out after a busier than expected lunch. I ordered the broccoli cheese casserole and coleslaw as sides. The pulled pork was moist and had a good smoky flavor to it. I tried it in a couple of their sauces which were quite good. The sides weren’t quite as nice. The casserole seemed to have been sitting too long and the flavors were far to lost in each other. I’m normally quite the coleslaw fan but was again disappointed. I’m not sure where they went wrong but they did. As far as our friends food it was a mixed bad as well. The Mac and cheese was enjoyed, as was the pork ribs and pulled chicken. Most everything else fell far short. The Brisket was almost inedible it was so dry and even their sauces couldn’t save it. The potato salad also missed the mark. One redeeming quality: A good whiskey and beer selection. As there a number of other BBQ places in the Boston area, ones cheaper and better, we will probably not be returning. Random famous person sighting: John Henry, the principal owner of the Red Sox, came in a few minutes before we left. My favorite thing: The biscuits with that scrumptious butter honey.

Ren: This week we headed over to former Top Chef star Tiffani Faison’s new BBQ hub: Sweet Cheeks Q. This joint also employs a friend of mine and as we hadn’t reviewed a BBQ place as of then we thought it would be a good option. With mixed emotions, just one word describes my experience: disappointed. While there were definitely items that teased my tasted buds there were several other that were inexcusably flavorless. The biscuits with honey butter and hush puppy appetizers were probably the most delicious items I tasted. In fact I would go so far as to say the hush puppies were probably the best I ever had. The beverage I selected was also a highlight of my evening, it was a delicious apple cider flavored drink garnished with a dried apple ring. For my entrée I ended up splitting the Fat Cheeks tray which contained a choice of three meats and two sides. We chose the pulled pork, brisket, and ribs (though pork belly would have been our first choice) with a side of mac&cheese and potato salad. The ribs, pulled pork, and mac&cheese were decent but not extremely flavorful. The brisket was dry and flavorless, (I have never had worse; which I know seems harsh but all my previous brisket experiences have been out of this world delectable) the potato salad was quite bland and the potatoes were too big. Perhaps these differentials in flavors is due to the fact that they recently opened their doors; in that light I may return in the far future to see if they’ve managed to work out the kinks. My favorite thing: The redeeming hush puppies.

Food: Seth 7 Ren 6 Food Ave: 6.5 There were some bright spots with the pulled pork, biscuits and the hush puppies, but for the price this food is not good enough.

Service: Seth 8 Ren 8 The waitress was attentive and had a few recommendations. Even as the place was busy she was around enough. Though the were out of pork belly, she checked for us when there would be more

Decor/Atmosphere: Seth 8 Ren 7.5 Nicely done space with a touch of industrial look to it. The tables where kind of like large benches, giving it a little bit of a picnic like feel; complete with water in Mason jars and BBQ sauce containers being homey like.

Total Average: 7.416 Nice looking place but the food is just not worth the money.
