Seth: **I apologize as I write this about six weeks after we ate here. Ignore any 20130320_194948discrepancies**   We arrived a little buzzed after out Bully Boy distillery tour with a good appetite. We started with our usual round of cocktails. After a slight hiccup with my first drink that Ren talks about we moved on to cocktails and entrees. The duck belly taco was absolutely delicious. We also got a Rillette and cod fritters for appetizers that were also good. Ren went with two appetizers for her entree, John and Makeda got two different burgers and I had a burger with pulled pork on top of it. I shall continue my stance that beef and pork will always be delicious when paired together! I ate the entire burger as well as tastes of everyone else’s and we found ourselves, for one of the first times in this blog’s history, too full for dessert. We told our waitress we’d pass and take the check. Undeterred, she brought us each back our own mini ice cream cone! Just about one big bite, it was a sweet close to a pretty good meal. My favorite thing: the pork belly taco, Yum!

Ren: A trip to Bully Boy for a liquor tour led us to look for a restaurant in the near vicinity.  I stumbled across the Gallows in my search. The menu looked good and I’d heard it was good from a few people so I thought we’d give it a try. Despite looking a little busy from the20130320_201204 outside we didn’t have to wait to be seated. We started the meal off with a few cocktails. Mine contained rum, cider, and fresh lemon a nice way to look forward to the spring that will soon be arriving. Seth made the mistake of ordering the fat washed whiskey drink believing the fat wash to be a bitters thing alas it was bacon and duck fat which made for a very strange drink. After the drinks we had cod fritters, lamb rillette, and duck belly tacos as our appetizers. The tacos were spectacular, juicy, and flavorful.  The fritters and lamb were pretty tasty and well made. For my entrée I decided to have two sides brussle sprouts, and the colcannon. The colcannon was the best of the two with more flavor though the potatoes were a little soupy. The brussle sprouts were ok but a little under-cooked  Everyone else had a burger which were very tasty and juicy. I finished my meal with a cup of coffee and after deciding their one dessert wasn’t for us our waitresses treated us two mini soft serve cones which were thoughtful and delicious. As a side note the menu this evening was Irish themed due to St. Patrick’s Day, I think I would like to return sometimes when they have their regular menu. All-in-all this place is worth a visit especially if you’re in to burgers which seem to be what they do best. Next time I’ll stick to meat dishes though not meat washed drinks. My favorite thing: the amazing flavorful 20130320_194936tacos!

Seth: We’ve been meaning to get to a Brazilian Steakhouse for a while so we decided this was a good a time as any. This place had opened not too long ago and had some good reviews behind it. We arrived early but were sat about 45 minutes late. I’ll always hold my peace but for some reason got a little fired up this time. I spoke to the hostess, who had me speak to the manager. He was more than accommodating, sitting us personally and making sure we were attended to. We started out with the salad bar and a nice bottle of wine. I didn’t want to fill up too much before the unlimited cuts of meat came, so I picked sparingly little at the bowl of bacon (!) and cheeses. When we sat we were explained that 20130126_221928the little round card next to each of us indicated whether we wanted more or not. One side was red, and the other green. When you had it flipped to green, a waiter with some sort of new cut of roasted meat was there every other minute cutting off a fresh piece right from the skewer. I tried the filet mignon, top sirloin, rib-eye, beef ribs, lamb chop, pork ribs and the cured pork sausage. Some of them were absolutely divine  others a little over cooked or under seasoned.  I learned to turn down stuff quick and pick just what I was interested in. After eating what must have been far more than I possible should have the manager didn’t skip a beat and returned with 5 desserts for the table. I really liked the flan and the papaya cream. I walked out of there a little heavier than I went in but enjoyed myself. I’d like to compare this to another Brazilian Steakhouse sometime. My favorite thing: The pork ribs and the huge bowl of bacon!

Ren: A recent desire for large amounts of steak lead us to the choose a Brazilian steakhouse for this weeks blog. Due to it being a Saturday, and us towing along a fairly large group, we had to set the reservation for 9:30. We got there a few minutes early and two of us decided to have a Caipirinha while we waited. Only it was more than a few minutes until we were seated. In fact it was almost 10:15 when we were finally shown to our seat. The manager apologized profusely saying there were several large parties that sat longer than predicted. We commenced the meal with a delicious bottle of Malbec and a trip to their salad bar. I snagged a few pieces of charcuterie, smoked salmon, fogo salad barasparagus, mozzarella balls, and bread. The charcuterie was the best part of my choices and everything else was average, though it was hard to fully appreciate because at that time the passing of the meat had commenced. It was an onslaught of beefy proportions!  A little overwhelming and exciting at the same time. The meat was decent. Some of it excellently cooked such as the top loin and the lamb, yet overall I was slightly disappointed by the flavor. After eating more than our stomachs could handle we finally ceased the onslaught and took a deep breath. Just when we thought it was all over they delivered one of each of their desserts to our table as a way to apologize for getting us to our table late. This was very appreciated. I especially enjoyed the wonderful flan but all of the desserts were fairly delicious. I’m not sure I will be making a return visit here but I do suggest it to anyone who has a large appetite and a hankering for a ton of beef.  My favorite thing: The flan and the endless choices

Food: Seth 7.5 Ren 6 Food Average: 6.75 Tasty grilled meats and a pretty decent salad bar. Perhaps what it lacks in above average quality it makes up in quantity.

Service: Seth 8 Ren 8 Though we were sat 45 minutes after our reservation, (I did make a little stink to the hostess) the manager made every attempt to make up for it. Sat us personally, had extra waiter attention our way, then gave us 5 complimentary desserts!

Decor/Atmosphere: Seth 7.5 Ren 6.5 A neat floral arrangement above the salad bar and some Brazilian type artwork on the walls, but not terribly much flair.

Total Average: 7.250 A slow start and a stronger finish. A whole lot of good food but a little pricey for the quality. I think I wanna go check out the Brazilian place in Eastie.

Makeda:  As Seth is too busy writing a paper this week for grad school, I will be guest writing for this post.  We were in the mood for something different, so why not Cambodian French fusion, a combination I would never think of pairing. I studied the menu heavily and made my selection before I even entered the restaurant.  When we arrived we were greeted and seated quickly, and started with a bottle of wine.  Elephant Walk has an unexpectedly casual atmosphere, which made for an enjoyable dinner.  If I had any question of how I would feel about Cambodian flavors, they were immediately erased with the first bite of my appetizer; perfect chunks of tuna mixed with creamy avocado, chopped peanuts added a necessary crunch.  A sampling of Seth’s watermelon goat cheese Salad also did not disappoint, the sweet crisp melon complemented the creamy goat cheese perfectly.  Keeping the seafood theme, I followed with a traditional Cambodian dish, described as seafood custard.  Wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed in coconut milk, I devoured every bite of the perfectly cooked seafood inside.  The coconut milk added creaminess without being too heavy.  As is custom I had a sampling of everyone’s entrées, tender duck with bites of caramelized pear left quite an impression, as did the braised short-rib. And then dessert, I finished the night off with the chocolate caramel tart, it was perfect.  A close runner-up was the fruit mouse, almost a palate cleanser it was tangy and just enough sweet.  I will definitely be back at Elephant Walk again; there are still so many things on the menu I need to try. My Favorite Thing: The tuna avocado salad!

Ren: A search for a cuisine we hadn’t tried yet led us to Elephant Walk. A Cambodian French fusion restaurant located near Fenway. We were feeling in a particularly celebratory mood so we decided to start the evening off with a bottle of rose Brut. Which was followed by a round of shots and tasty cocktails making for a very excellent evening. For my appetizer I had spring rolls followed by mussels. Both were incredibly tasty and well prepared with a flavorful dipping sauce and a delightful broth with a kick. Makeda  had a tuna avocado salad appetizer salad which was refreshing and surprisingly flavorful which we all loved. For my entrée I had a pepper caramelized steak over lettuce with white rice. The flavor profile was a great idea and tasty but I found the steak to be slightly over cooked. If it had been cooked just a little bit less I think it would have been much better. John’s short ribs were tender as was Seth’s duck; definitely worth a try. I didn’t get a dessert but I tried a bite of everyone else’s which while a bit to sweet for me were all delicious. The caramel tart was definitely the best of the three. All in all it was a really pleasant evening worth a repeat visit. My favorite thing: a tie between the mussels and the spring rolls.

Service: Ren 8.5 Makeda 8 Other than a slip-up with improper glasses for the Brut, the waitress was friendly and fun. She knew the menu and interacted with our table well.

Total Average: 7.917 We’ll be back here again. The food and service stood out enough to warrant another trip sometime soon. Maybe date night.

One bad thing: Ren’s steak was overcooked and a little dry

Seth: Off to the South End for Restaurant Week to a place we’d been before but never got to review on here. My friend Ryan and his girlfriend Jen came to join the normal crowd of the 4 of us. We made a reservation the day before and when we arrived we were sat in a circle high-back booth. We poured over the special menu and  half of us stuck to it while the rest went with the regular one. We all started with a round of drinks before picking out each of our appetizers, main courses and desserts. My tuna tartare was a little under-whelming but tasty; not as much flavor as I was hoping for. I tried a mussel that had a great sauce and the calamari was really tasty with a great dipping sauce. Next came the perfectly cooked flank steak with a chimichurri sauce that was quite tasty. John’s cod was cooked perfectly as well and had great flavor. Desserts were last and my S’more was ok. Not enough graham cracker and the I think it would have been better with the chocolate softened or melted. A pretty good meal, with good company and an all around enjoyable evening. I’d like to get back here again some time. Maybe I’ll take my fiancée here on a date soon. My favorite thing: The bite of calamari I grabbed

Ren: We took a hop, a skip, and a jump right into the chic booths of Union Bar & Grill this week for the ever tempting restaurant week menu. Though only three out of the six of us ordered off the special menu as some were lured by delicious regular menu items. This was my third visit to this dining establishment and I’ll have to say probably my least favorite visit; though it was still quite an excellent experience. I started my evening with a drink called a new American Classic that contained bourbon, bubbles, and bitters (a delightful combination). My first course was corn fritters topped with crab; a decent beginning, though I thought my boyfriends mussels was the tastiest appetizer on the table. My entrée was the steak with fingerling potatoes and zucchini paired with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The dish was decent, the meat perfectly cooked but a little over salty. I wasn’t wowed by anyone else’s entrée though my boyfriend’s fish was excellently cooked. I topped off my evening with a cheese platter and a bourbon flip both were extremely delightful and made for a perfect end to the evening. My third experience to this restaurant leads me to think fish and cocktails  is definitely what they do well and everything else is fairly average. My favorite thing: The well paired cheese plate

Total Average: 8.083 A great place to take a date. Better than average food that may have missed a half-step due to the business of Restaurant Week. Still worth a check

Seth: On a rainy Friday afternoon we finally made our way to hungry mother.  Ren and I finally accepted a 45 minute wait and it was worth it.  I arrived first and put in out name, and Ren and john arrived minutes later.  Once we were sat we figured out our cocktails pretty quick and got to ordering.  We started with an appetizer of duck liver pate, which was tasty but perhaps not as rich as I would have liked. The blue fish croquettes on the other hand were absolutely phenomenal.  While were waiting for out  entrées, the chef brought us out a free tasting of sweet bread and bacon skewers with a chimichurri sauce.  I’m pretty sure this is my first experience with sweet bread and paired with the tomato and bacon, I’m now a fan.  Ren and I couldn’t resist ordering the same entrée this week, as one cannot turn down wagyu beef.  I’m glad I went ahead with this as the beef was tender and perfectly cooked.  It came with a nice cream corn and blackened cabbage that added the proper contrast to the dish.  Somewhere in there we ordered a second round of drinks.  I followed up my first cocktail with an IPA.  As is mandatory, we picked out a dessert to share, decided on the chocolate pie with the  caramel sauce.   I was completely full and could only have one bite, but it was sweet and moist and tasty.  Hungry Mother has an ever revolving menu, so I will absolutely be here again.  As a note: be sure to make reservations in advance. My favorite thing: That incredible cut of beef.

Ren: Hungry Mother equals taste bud bliss! Me and Seth have been meaning to go here for quite sometime and a visit with a friend finally prompted a visit. Joined by my boyfriend we set off on a journey of delectable proportions. We commenced with a few tasty beverages from the bar. My Vieux Carré was excellently made as was every concoction we ordered; especially a taste of a Corpse Reviver variation invented by the bartender. The round of sumptuous taste relievers was followed by an appetizer of pâté and shortly after by an appetizer of blue fish croquettes. The pâté was tasteful but not quite as rich as I would have like it to be. The croquettes, however, were incredibly flavorful and well-balanced. The chef  then sent us a taste of sweet bread paired with bacon and tomato to tease our taste buds and prepare us for our entrées that followed which were mind-blowing! My boyfriends striped bass, Seth’s and my Wagyu steak were all cooked to perfection. Everything simply melted in our mouths. My steak was well paired with a creamed corn and a side of cabbage. We topped the evening off with a smooth and tasty chocolate pie with coffee whipped cream and caramel sauce. Two words: go here! We had an amazing experience and I am definitely going back whenever I am in the area. My favorite thing: my out of this world Wagyu steak with the creamed corn.

Seth: It’s been a bit since we’ve had Italian or seafood, or been to Cambridge so we put all these together for this weeks spot. A bit of an old school Rat Pack style Italian joint welcomed and we were sat right away. We started with a beer and a chipotle cream sauce Mussels that were a great start. The bread that came we devoured dipping it in the left over sauce. This probably had something to do with not being able to finish but half my entrée later. The service was enthusiastic and the music in homage to Sinatra. We all ordered entrées next. I wanted what’s known as their ‘famous’ steak tips but decided to opt for something I don’t make regularly myself and got the Shrimp and Scallop Florentine. The seafood was cooked well and the sauce was nice. I was a little under-whelmed but it was good. I had bites of Makeda’s crab caked that were meaty and done nicely. Ren’s veal was delicious with a fantastic accompanying sauce. John’s Shrimp scampi had a nice zesty wine butter sauce to it. None of us were able to finish and all had our leftovers bagged. As is tradition though, we can’t very well go with out dessert. We couldn’t quite settle on one so we ordered both the tiramisu and the cannoli. The latter tasted almost of cookie dough and not really in the good way. The tiramisu was really nice and light and far better than our last attempt at Q Restaurant. Ren and I had a second beer in there somewhere and when we were all quite full, we took our leave. My favorite thing: The mussels were a perfect starter

Ren: A little jaunt to the north brought us to East Side Grille where tales of four and half stars teased our appetites and thoughts of Italian proportions settled our decision. We commenced the evening with a few Harpoon drafts and an appetizer of mussels and cream sauce: which was rich and delicious and reminded us of a fondue. The atmosphere was Italian family style with a few paintings of happy couple taking promenades and wait staff with casual food knowledge and big personalities. It is a comfortable establishment with decent food. After appetizers we were given a round of side salads which is my favorite thing about family style restaurants. Then a wondrous veal marsala with a side of mashed potatoes was delivered to my seat. It was an above average, nice, broth style dish. Everyone else’s entrées were of similar ranking. We finished the meal with a slice of tiramisu and a chocolate chip cannoli. The cannoli was ok and the tiramisu was good and light. All in all its better than most average Italian but not quite high-class: worth a visit if you’re in the area. My favorite thing: the delicious mussels!

questions were asked. Not as knowledgeable as they could have been on their own menu

Total Average: 7.417 This had really good reviews and I think we only caught flashes of that for our trip. Maybe it needs another visit but it was hardly above average

One bad thing: Not much to put here. Perhaps our tables proximity to the servers station and the kitchen doors

Seth: A place Ren had been before and a cuisine we haven’t put here on this blog was enough to get us over to South Boston for some comfort style Polish food. We walked in to a small welcoming family owned looking place and were sat at some nice raw wood style bench tables. We took a look at the menu and John and I started with some Polish beers. For appetizers we got the smoked salmon with russian caviar that was really nice and some bacon wrapped scallops that I think had more bacon than scallop (though I wasn’t complaining). The bread we got before those came with a bacon fat spread that for any pork lover out there was a dream. For entrees, Makeda and John got the pierogis that I thought, from the bites I had were pretty nice. The caramelized onions added a little something. Ren had that duck that was done well but not outstanding. I was happiest with my own plate which was something of a sampler. It came with stuffed cabbage that had a nice creamy sauce on it, a few of my own pierogis and that grilled keilbasa that was phenomenal. I was completely full after, but we couldn’t very well leave without trying a dessert. We ordered on Chocolate Babka cake to split that was exceptionally rich. I think the girls had a bit more of it. The service was pretty average over all but I liked the atmosphere of the place. I would probably come back here again for that keilbasa and maybe to try out a few more of the traditional dishes. My favorite thing: The grilled keilbasa.

Ren: Best suited as a cold weather destination the hearty Polish fare from Café Polonia tempted us with promises of bacon butter and delicious perogies. I have been to this restaurant once before and found the food good enough to return with my brother and or significant others in tow for a review. The waiter immediately brought us bread with bacon butter: a promising start. We then ordered a round of drinks. I picked a Sauvignon Blanc which to my dismay the waiter replied with ‘which one was that’? (There only about eight wines on the menu). It seems to me with such a small selection he would at least know the types of wines, though to be fair I am sure they sell mostly beer here. We paired our round of drinks with an order of bacon wrapped scallops and salmon with caviar. I loved the scallops, with its crispy bacon shell, really how could you go wrong? The salmon and caviar were a little salty for me but my dining mates seemed to heartily enjoy the dish. For my entrée I chose the duck breast with asparagus, cranberry sauce, beets, and homemade thick cut potatoes chips. The chips were a little plain and the rest of the dish was fairly good tasting with no particular flair or stand out flavors. Our significant others ordered pierogis which were delicious. I was surprised by how sweet the cheese pierogis which were almost dessert like in flavor. If you  tend towards the savory I definitely suggest getting  meat or adding potatoes to the them. My Brother ordered a sampler dish which consisted of one of the most delicious items Café Polonia serves: kielbasa! Next time I go I will order this as my main dish and perhaps even the kielbasa appetizer which I recalled later was one of the more delicious experiences of my previous visit.  We finished the meal with their molten chocolate cake which even though I don’t have much of a sweet tooth was delicious and is a must for the end of any experience at this restaurant. My favorite thing: the kielbasa: to bad I only had a bite.

Food: Seth 7.5 Ren 7 Food Average: 7.25 Kielbasa stood out. The pierogis were pretty good. Most everything was average. Don’t get us wrong; we enjoyed the food but no real standouts

Decor/Atmosphere: Seth 8 Ren 8 Cute little place. Copper pots on the walls and raw wood chairs. Feels like it could almost be some Polish mother’s kitchen.

Service: Seth 7 Ren 6.5 Our server meant well, but made a few mistakes including with our food and wasn’t sure what Ren meant when she said she wanted a Sauvignon Blanc!? Good attitude and was trying.

Total Average: 7.333 It’s the only Polish place I know of and I would recommend it. A good average cute place that’s worth a visit.

One bad thing: Perhaps the missteps with our pierogis. Makeda wanted the fried potato and cheese ones and she got the boiled cheese only ones first. Our server fixed it pretty quick though
